Professionally monitored customers
If you are planning on using our professionally monitored plan with Police response then the cellular backup is not mandatory but it is highly recommended!
Your central hub communicates with our network using the internet, primarily using your local Wi-Fi. The sensors don't use your WiFi but instead use an internal Zwave network. The connection between your hub and our network is key for functions in the Boundary app as well as communication with the Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) if you have police monitoring.
Cellular backup means your hub can still communicate with our network even if your local Wi-Fi stops working. Instead of Wi-FI, the hub would use 4G or 2G as a backup to communicate with our network. This means that your home is still protected if your Wi-Fi fails due to a technical issue or if an intruder cuts your telephone cable.
As cellular backup requires a SIM card, with a phone contract, Boundary charges a small monthly fee for the service. The service is a global roaming SIM encrypted to your Boundary hub and will always lock onto the strongest signal.
Can I add the cellular backup to my standard hub?
Unfortunately not. The hub does require hardware changes within the unit which is why we supply cellular hubs separately from standard hubs. If you do wish to swap your hub then by all means contact our support team and we will take you through the process. Please be aware however there will be a charge for the replacement hub and you will need to pair up your sensors again once the unit has been swapped over.
