Ajax is an intruder alarm company based in Ukraine. With a focus on cutting-edge hardware, Ajax’s alarm has a lot of similarities with ours, but we differ in some key areas – we go through these below.
To complete this comparison, we requested a quote from an Ajax authorised installer. As you can choose from several installers, prices vary.
How to Buy
As alluded to above, the main way to buy an Ajax alarm in the UK is from an authorised installer. You’ll be sent a quote for the alarm system and installation, on request.
With ourselves, you purchase the Boundary alarm on our website. The prices are easy to find and you design the alarm yourself.
Alarm Systems
Below we compare our alarm system prices with Ajax:
Boundary | Ajax | |
---|---|---|
Central Hub | £219 | £168 |
Internal Siren | Included within the hub | £74.88 |
Contact Sensors (each) | £30 | £51.58 |
Motion Sensors (each) | £30 | £60.84 |
External Siren | £90 | £124.80 |
Key Fobs | £20 for two | £46.80 each |
Motion Sensors
Motion sensors are the watchmen of your home. From the corners of rooms, they scan for burglars by detecting changes in infrared heat.
Both Boundary and Ajax offer motion sensors which are pet-friendly, but with different specifications:
Boundary Motion Sensor | Ajax Motion Sensor | |
---|---|---|
Ignores pet movement | Up to 35kg | Up to 20kg and 50cm in height |
Activate pet friendly mode | Simple, directly through the mobile app | Through the Ajax app |
Recommended installation height | 2.25m | 2.4m |
Motion detection range | 20m | 12m |
Wireless Connectivity
To allow sensors to communicate with the Hub and your phone, Ajax uses its own proprietary technology called Jeweller. This was developed in-house so any problems are up to Ajax to fix. It also makes future integrations with 3rd party smart devices trickier.
The Boundary alarm uses Z-wave 700, a widely-used wireless technology that uses low-energy radio waves to connect the Hub and its sensors.
Z-wave is extremely secure and reliable, which is why it’s been chosen by over 3,000 other smart home devices worldwide. Read more about Z-wave here.
Installation
With the Boundary alarm, you can choose between self-installation and pro-installation (for an additional fee). With our Complete plan, you also get free annual maintenance, completed by a Boundary engineer.
As Ajax systems are generally supplied via an installer, costs to get up and running will vary dependent on the system size, how far the installer has to travel, individual business costs etc.
Alarm Standards, Certification and Police response
Boundary | Ajax | |
---|---|---|
NPCC System Type | A* | A |
Product Grading | 2* | 2 |
URN Issued for monitored systems? | Yes | Dependent on installer |
NSI/SSAIB Approved Company? | Yes - SSAIB** | Ajax - No, Installer requirement |
NSI/SSAIB Approved Installation? | Yes - SSAIB | Dependent on installer |
NSI/SSAIB Approved Monitoring? | Yes - NSI Gold | Dependent on installer |
Approved for Level 1 Police Response? | Yes | Only where the system is a certified installation, 24/7 monitored and a URN issued |
* Boundary alarm is currently being tested to meet required standards but has not yet completed the testing process. Police response plans will be available shortly after launch
** SSAIB certification only applies to our professionally installed product and does not extend to DIY installs
For your alarm system to be professionally monitored and registered with your local police force it must:
- Be a system that has a minimum grade 2 rating
- Have the system installed by an NSI or SSAIB certified company
- Be monitored by an Alarm Receiving Centre that is also certified by the NSI or SSAIB
- The supplying company be registered with the local Police force on their Compliant Systems list
- Have a URN (Unique Reference Number) issued by the local Police force after installation
Ajax systems are generally sold as units to installers. This will means that your installer would have to register with the NSI/SSAIB and be able to provide (or recommend) monitoring services. They would also have to be approved by your local Police force to supply a monitored system. This is quite a lengthy process to get all this setup.
Boundary can provide a complete end-to-end service for a professionally monitored system with annual maintenance and registration with your local Police force making the whole process of obtaining a monitored system hassle-free!
